“Cyningdom Rejectamenta”

Kain’s story begins like all the other Kingdom rejects: dragged out and left with just the clothes on his back. He doesn’t even have the memory of the man he used to be. What he does have though is something all rejects seem to share, at least at first: an overwhelming desire to be let back in.

Of course, that could just be the fear talking, as Kain’s first encounter suggests. Arguing with two old blind men sitting near the wall’s base, Kain loudly insists that regardless of why they are rejected, it’s not fair, and he should be let back in. The blind men aren’t able to convince Kain that there are worse fates to be had — like being eaten by the cannibalistic Scavengers lurking nearby in the Forest — and instead, Kain’s yelling only leads to their capture.

As the three sit and “stew” in the Scavenger’s slow cooking cauldron, Kain yells again, but this time for help. Success! Kain is freed by Argamond and The Hangers, an armed collection of outcasts who gather other rejects and give them a purpose: to attack the Kingdom. But just as Kain’s optimism is on the rise, it turns out the Hangers aren’t as competent as Kain might have hoped. Before he (or they) might get himself pointlessly killed, Kain decides he’s better off looking for success on his own.
