I started Salvager Kain in 2006. The story began as a minicomic, self-published by my comic company Fool’s Gold Press, and sold exclusively in specialty comic shops across North America. After finishing the fourth issue — the first hundred pages — in February 2009, I chose to adapt the story’s next chapter into webcomic format. Changing the format this way would allow me to reach more people, tell the story in color, and provide more regular installments to fans.
The online webcomic, however, is the continuation of a story already underway. If you’d like to know more about what’s happened previously, I’d encourage you to purchase copies of the first four issues from one of the retailers listed on this page. I will have an online store to sell these issues and more, but that’s still to come. If you’d rather just know the highlights of what came before, I have a brief summary of the first four issues’ plots available elsewhere on this site. The current storyline will also include a certain amount of “recap” to bring new readers up-to-date. But please note, the first four issues will not be added to be viewed online; they are meant to be seen in print, only.
I do intend to collect the online story and make it available in print format as chapters conclude. If you subscribe to the RSS feed for the site, you’ll get first notice of when future issues are available in print.
As for the story itself, I’ve structured the series to be ongoing, but full of separate, smaller arcs that capture Kain’s efforts to return to the Kingdom. For the first four issues, I proudly made mention of my effort to make self-contained issues, where a 24-page comic would reach a satisfying conclusion and not leave you hanging on a cliffhanger. With the story’s continuation online, that sense of closure isn’t the same, since the format is now segmented. However, I’m still breaking the story in roughly 24-page issue chapters, and creating the art to be reproduced in regular comic book size. The online installments are just a “tier” of panels, and their names reflect which part of which page they hail from (ex. 502A is the top half and 502B is the bottom half of issue 5, page 2). And we are still heading somewhere; Kain hopes it’s into the Kingdom. Keep reading and maybe we’ll all be surprised!
I hope you enjoy the story. If you have any questions or comments, please contact me here and let me know.
